I think many women perceive insufficient milk because that may be Mother
Nature's way of ensuring the mother will continue to mother and feed her
baby. I distinctly remember going thru a period in the early weeks with
each of my 3 babies where I was convinced my babies weren't getting enough
and that I was starving them to death. Understandable with my first, but
with my 2nd and 3rd, I had already been an LC for over 10 years! I
remember my oldest (who was 12 and 13 years old when her sisters were born)
looking at me like I had lost my mind one day when I was sure the baby
wasn't getting enough to eat. She undressed the baby in front of me and
started counting fat rolls on the baby's arms and legs and told me that the
doctor would yell at me and tell me to put the baby on a diet because she
was too fat! Out of the mouths of babes! I think this happens to some
extent to every mother with every baby because I believe this is the
influence of our hormones, forcing the mother to want to stick around and
nuture her baby, which in turn, ensures the survival of the species. I
like to tell moms when they are doing skin-to-skin to put their heads down
close to their babies' heads and listen. "Do you hear your hormones
talking to your baby's hormones?" Some of the moms swear that they do!
So, there may be a positive purpose to some of these maternal perceptions.
