Hi. I had another disturbing case yesterday. The kind that makes me sad. A
mom with a less than 1 week old baby c/o sore nipples. Home visit showed
baby nursing well- sucks, swallows, satisfied. Latch-on ok with occasional
rolled in lower lip which we fixed. I was convinced mom had yeast (cesarean
birth, automatic antibiotics, previous history- vaginal yeast). it took a
couple of days to convince her she had it. Was going to give it to Monday,
but couldn't stand the pain and frustration.

Feels ok with her decision to wean. Question: In 20 hours since nursing, she
has not felt full, engorged or even slight discomfort. Now convinced she
never had milk and that was why baby was fussy and *sucked so hard as to
cause pain*. I explained that I had run into this before. I fully believe
she had a wonderful milk supply (sucks, swallows, full breast before, soft
breast after, diapers, weight gain, etc. all great) but that the stress of
deciding whether to wean, dreading feeding the baby because of pain and all
else associated may have caused her body to "shut down" just as she was
ready to quit. Any comments? How do you explain all signs of good feedings
(except mom's pain) and then an easy cold turkey weaning? Have you seen
this before? TIA.
