I experienced breastmilk jaundice with my second child and what a horrible
experience. Some MDs do not understand what they do to a mother when
they allude to the fact that your breastmilk is causing your baby to be
hospitalized and part of the "solution" is formula!??! My son had gone from
6#7oz at birth to 9#1oz at 1 month, so it was obvious that it was not a "lack
of breastfeeding!" I understand wanting to do tests to rule out other things
but he was put on formula for 48 hours during this time and I was told to
pump. It is very emotional for moms, and we all just need to make sure we
convey to these moms that they are still doing the best thing they can for
their babies by breastfeeding. I was lucky that I had lots of training and I
KNEW I was doing the best thing but I can only imagine what a less educated
mother would have felt like. Finally, after the hospital stay and all tests came
back okay, it was labeled "Breastmilk jaundice" and it disappeared by 3 months
of age. It is awful to watch your baby lay under the lights, told only to hold
them minimally and not be "allowed" to nurse. With confidence of the mother
being one of the biggest reasons if not THE biggest reason for weaning,
physicians need to be really careful about how they handle the
supplementation with jaundice issue!
