According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the National Eye Institute, lutein supplements for adults are still being studied. Most of the large trials so far have been on people who reported eating lutein (in leafy greens, for the most part). There's a larger and better-designed trial underway now. All I can find on Abbott's website is a study showing that lutein is the primary carotenoid in an infant's brain, and another that concludes, "[Lutein and zeaxanthin]'s role in development during early life is potentially important. Their mechanisms of action will require extensive additional research." In other words, we don't know much yet, but it sounds really great and scientific to throw one more thing in the formula and call it "closer to breast milk than ever before."
