I have to disagree with Lauri's last statement on the subject,"the baby would be much safer supplemented with a commercial formula." I don't think we know whether one breast milk substitute is better than another. An assumption is being made that what is commercially-produced is safer to what is made in the home. Can we assume this? We now have three soy powdered formulas that were tested by Consumer Reports and have been found to have genetically engineered ingredients. We also have trans fats(coconut, palm, etc) in commercial formulas. While Lauri states that," this formula(the homemade macrobiotic one)substitute has some substances that can promote allergies." All breast milk substitutes have the ability to promote allergies. Why do we think that because it is made commercially it has to be safer? As far as I am concerned, formula companies have done a good sales job. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
