Comfort Proteins are Nestle/Carnation's marketing words for partially
hydrolyzed whey proteins. When Carnation entered the US market they needed a gimmick
to peddle their formula. Because Mead Johnson and Ross had the hospitals and
physician offices locked up tight with their extensive fleet of salespersons,
Nestle cooked up a 100% whey protein formula with partially hydrolyzed
proteins. They advertised it as hypoallergenic until many babies with cow's milk
allergy reacted to it. After court actions, the labeling on this formula changed so
as not to imply that it was hypoallergenic. I remember the uproar when we
realized that the stools of the babies being fed this formula were green.
Carnation's marketing brochures at the time stated how close this new formula was to
breast milk including, "green stools, just like breast milk!"

Now that Nestle has added DHA/ARA to its 100% whey protein formula, babies
can enjoy fermented microalgae, soil fungus, and unbalanced protein ratios all
in the same serving.
