A mother asked for ideas on whether or not it's feasible to tandem
nurse her 15 month old daughter at this point. She has given me
permission to discuss it here.

Some background. Her daughter is 15 months old, and stopped nursing
about 4 months ago. Mom was pregnant at the time, and her milk dried
up. The pregnancy ended 2 months ago at 22 weeks gestation when she
delivered a stillborn baby. Her milk did not come in at that time. She
is now 5 weeks pregnant again, and is producing colostrum. Since her
now 15-month old is interested in nursing again, she doesn't want to
push her away - especially with the events of the past 3 months. She
experiencing sore nipples common with pregnancy, and her daughter has
an intense suck. She's concerned about latch (which we will look at),
but also about her milk supply and nipple soreness.

My understanding and research indicates that the nipple soreness may
not go away even if potential latch problems are addressed due to
pregnancy hormones, etc. causing nipple irritation. Are the normal
things one would do to increase milk supply safe while pregnant? (ie.,
Blessed Thistle, goat's milk rue, brewer's yeast, fenugreek, etc)? She
already knows oatmeal and water are safe ;).

All in all, she's comfortable with the idea of comfort nursing her 15
month old for the time being. She's hoping that her daughter will
continue to want to nurse until such time as the new baby is born and
her milk does come in, but she's not sure of the likelihood of that
happening.

Thoughts and comments are appreciated.
