What kind of supportive literature are you looking for? Literature
that shows introduction of artificial nipples will undermine
breastfeeding? Literature that encourages rooming-in? As far as
stuffing cotton into a bottle nipple to be used as a pacifier, I don't
think we'll find research on that because it's using a product for
something other than its intended use. You might just suggest the
issue of product liability. (People in hospitals tend to hate the "L"
word.)

I found these references in the ASPO/Lamaze Position Paper on Infant
Feeding which reprinted information taken from the ILCA 1995 Position
Paper.

Salariya EM, Easton PM, Cater JI: Duration of breast-feeding after
early initiation and frequent feeding. Lancet 2:1141-43, 1978.

Keefe MR: The impact of infant rooming-in on maternal sleep at night.
JOGNN 17:122-26, 1988.

Norr KF, Roberts JE, Feese U: Early postpartum rooming-in and maternal
attachment behaviors in a group of medically indigent primiparas. J
Nurs Midwif 34:85-91, 1989.

Yamauchi Y, Yamanouchi I: The relationship between rooming in/not
rooming-in and breast-feeding variables. Acta Paediatr Scand
79:1017-22, 1990.

Waldenstrom U, Swenson A: Rooming-in at night in the post-partum ward.
 Midwifery 7:82-89, 1991.

Victora CG, Tomasi E., Olinto MTA, et al: Use of pacifiers and
breastfeeding duration. Lancet 341(8842); 404-6, 1993.

Newman J: Breastfeeding problems associated witht he early
introduction of bottles and pacifiers. J Hum Lact 6:59-63, 1990.

Anderson GC McBride MR, Dahm J. Et al: Development of sucking in term
infants from birth to four hours postbirth. Res Nurs Health 5:21-27,
1982.

There are probably others I'm overlooking. Any other favorites out
there? Hope this helps.
