I have also used store bought Chocolate chip cookies and home made Chocolate
chip cookies to demonstrate the idea of formula versus mom's milk, the
proportions of BFers vs FFers, that Mom (myself) decides not the baby
(students in class) what they will get. I also continue to hand out cookies
at the 6 month and 1 year and 2 year mark. I chose one guy in class
(usually an outspoken young man) and give him home made Chocolate cookies on
demand like a BF baby in the early days. I've been known to remove a store
bought cookie froma desk and said *oops! That cookie has been sitting out
too long. I need to throw it away now!* and I do throw it away.

With teenagers I try to speak to the issues that they are concerned about -
how their body looks, losing the weight, control - over themselves and their
own baby (I work often with pregnant and parenting teens so I'm trying to
effect the decisions they are making NOW not 5-10 years from now), money - a
year's worth of formula and healthcare costs for a FF baby is enough to buy
a decent used car or a really awesome stereo system, the health issues of
FFing. I spend some time talking about what RISK means versus *you will
definitely have this happen to you*. I always have a teen say they were FF
and didn't get sick, lower IQ, etc. Over my clothes I hold my breasts
gently, on the side, near my arm pits and declare that *My breasts are NOT
for selling beer, cars, tools, liquor, cigarettes, etc. but for nurturing,
comforting, continuing the awesome work of my body by growing my baby*. I
do admit that they have the awesome side benefit of being somewhat
pleasurable for my husband and myself. It takes a LOT of moxy to do this
but the kids really do GET IT when I do this short demonstration. I also
talk about my breasts like they are truly a part of MY body like my elbow,
neck, back, head, foot, etc. I try to impart the idea that breasts aren't
really gross, disgusting, something not to be touched my the person attached
to them.

I ask the teacher to do a pre-quiz a few days before I arrive. It gives me
some idea what myths I need to explode and focus on. I pass out slips of
paper and ask them to write any question or concern down and have them pass
them all forward. I quickly scan them and answer as many as I can during my
presentation. They do a post-quiz afterward. Its amazing how different the
answers are. I ask some attitude questions to see if I may have changed
some attitudes about BFing.

I have always brought my nursing baby (up to about 18 months) into class
with me. I nurse them if the opportunity presents itself.
