Pat: I just hope that this woman will bring back this thriving child
several months down the road and tell the physician that this child has
thrived on one-sided breastfeeding. I can understand her hesitancy to do
this currently, but once there is no danger of this ignoramus making her
life difficult, she should educate him with "the proof is in the pudding".
I am a strong believer in not allowing this kind of ignorance to continue
unchallenged. Whenever I am contacted by a mother whose physician has
given her ignorant or unsupportive advice, I contact the physician myself,
hear his/her side of it, and then "educate" to whatever degree I can
depending on their receptivity. Of course, there are some who are
determined to remain blissfully ignorant, but some are really grateful for
the information. Perhaps if she is uncomfortable about confronting the
doc, she can find a supportive physician to speak to him. Regards, Alicia
Dermer, MD, IBCLC.
