When I read Kathy D's quote with a request for elaboration from Dr Jack my
thoughts jumped to the really long term benefits of breastfeeding first:
reduced risk of cancer, DM, hypercholesterolemia, etc. I printed the quote
to use at my upcoming breastfeeding group and that lead to my personal
hindsight that the most important thing I have done for my children is to
have breastfed them. I am glad none of the five have my asthma, are
strong, healthy young adults. But mostly I am thrilled to see the caring,
loving people they are. Our oldest daughter was married this summer and
the number one comment from our guests, extended family and close friends
alike, was what close friends the 5 plus the new 1 were, how polite and
considerate to others. Not to say they are always like this and that
raising them is not without very difficult times: they are not perfect
kids! But I think an additional advantage of breastfeeding is that the
"deeper than a thought, stronger than a feeling" that kept me breastfeeding
throughout numerous difficulties gave me the skills I needed to parent
through numerous difficulties. Enough!
