This has been said several ways by several people:

There is no one that knows more about infant feeding than we do as board
certified lactation consultants. Most often the pediatricians are
"recommending" a formula based on the latest info from the formula reps.
While I'm not going to tell a mom to use Similac over Enfamil over Good Start
over Parent's Choice, I AM going to tell a mom that I have concerns about
supplementing a breastfed baby with formulas that contain synthetic fatty
acids and/or excess iron. And I believe that is my responsibility. If I
leave it to the pediatrician, they will recommend a high iron, synthetic
fatty acid added formula based on nothing but how nice and/or persuasive the
formula rep is.

I think we have a responsibility to protect our breastfeeding babies when at
all possible. If the mom is weaning and wants to go to a formula, then I
will continue to tell her low iron until the baby is at least 3/4 weaned, and
then to discuss which formula is best for her baby with her physician.

And that is NOT "touting" one brand of formula over another.
