I know I am posting a bit late in this thread, sorry. I noted that no
one has mentioned the following as of yet: Alimentum is not cow milk
free, it is hydrolized, which means the proteins are smaller in size and
easier to digest. Keep in mind that, an infant may have a cow milk
protein sensitivity or an allergy. For a severe sensitivity or true cow
milk allergies, an Amino Acid based formula should be considered such as
Neocate. It does not contain ANY cow milk base as does Alimentum and
Nutramigen. Many babies may be able to tolerate the hydrolized cow milk
based formulas but the more severe reactions or allergies do better with
the Neocate. Yes, I vaguely remember seeing several situations in the
past older infants and toddler ages needing blood due to anemia from
poor nutrution. have seen due to severe cow milk formula intolerance
anemia with intestinal bleeing, parents giving cow milk instead of
mothers milk or formula to older infant but I dont recall any due to
breastfeeding and cow milk allergies.
Would there be consideration of trial of Neocate that would be easier on
the baby's gut than the Alimentum along with breastfeeding? If the baby
cant tolerate any protein that is getting through mom's milk then they
should not be able to tolerate the cow milk protein that is hydrolized
in the alimentum. I am sorry but I dont remember if mom is being
vigilant to eliminate all milk and soy products. Just cutting down or
not drinking milk is not enough in a situation like this.
Happy New Year!
