This is for Andrea Tran's posting regarding post discharge phone calls. Our
unit has been doing a Performance Improvement project where patients were
contacted after discharge by phone and they were recontacted again at 3, 6, 9 and
12 months to see how they were doing with breastfeeding and if anything they
learned in the hospital was useful or did they feel they needed anyother
information. I have not been a part of the call team, since they need to be
bilingual, but our Breastfeeding Taskforce has taken some of information and we are
using it to help improve our education of the patient. Interestingly, the
concept of all staff saying the same thing is essential. We have developed cards
for Moms with Breastfeeding Tips and one for the staff so we can all be giving
out the same information (especially the night shift). We have implemented a
mandatory Breastfeeding Education for all staff including Patient Care Techs.
When these are completed we will hitting up the Pediatricans and OB
caregivers with a handout for their staff and themselves...so they know what we are
teaching the evidence its based on.
The questions need to be simple and the callers have a list to call and
follow up with so their can be a "relationship" in the follow up calls. Anytime a
Mom wants "out" she can leave the survey.
Interestingly enough our NM who isn't really into breastfeeding has decided
we need a second PI project on Patient Education. She has asked us to take
down some of our teaching posters and all posters will now go through her. She
declined to pay for 3 of us to go to ILCA because we have had "too many
Breastfeeding Conferences paid for"....so we will pay out of pocket ourselves
because we believe that networking helps to enhance the patients knowledge through
our knowledge. What she doesn't realize is that a Patient Education focus will
not involve bathing and diapering it always comes back to
breastfeeding/infant feeding questions primarily.
Hope this has given you an idea on your survey. You can privately email me if
you want me to get you samples of the questions the girls ask the patients.
