Just got the news-it's good. Dad has to go to Mom's every other weekend (
they now live 8 hrs apart) and gets custody of the baby from 8AM to 8 PM
Thursday, Friday, Sat and Sun from 8AM to 5PM. He has to stay in a motel near
the mother. If the baby needs to nurse or is tramatized in any way, he has to
return the baby to be nursed. Mom has to come here in the months with 5
weekends on that 5th weekend and Dad gets the baby from 8AM Thursday to 5PM
Sun including overnights but Dad has to stay with his own parents so the
grandparents can help, and if the baby is tramatized in any way, by bottle
feeding or by being away from Mom at bedtime, the grandparents and Dad are
ordered to return the baby to Mom who has to be on call. If they do not call
Mom, the entire custody is revoked. I told Mom this sounds like a very good
compromise because I have seen custody of babies split 50-50 on a weekly
basis.
She said the judge said in his closing remarks that he had no idea there was
an International expert (WOW!) living in our town nor did he know that
breastfeeding was so widely researched and so important. He said that the
information presented in this case was very helpful in determining what was
best for this baby. The Mom has 6 weeks before this arrangement begins.
In the midst of this I have had 2 consults at night, phone consults with the
other moms, and did a 6 hr Health Fair today. I am going to go fix pizza,
spread a quilt on the floor and watch a video and eat pizza with that man who
says that the only reason I keep him around any more is to do breast pumps
deliveries and answer the phone!! He had no idea when we married 26 yrs ago
what he was getting into.! Spouses of IBCLC's and LLLL's are very special
people.
Good night!

Barbara Whitehead, IBCLC
