There was a very moving and powerful piece on the radio (CBC) this
morning, a follow up to a case in Manitoba last year about a pregnant
glue sniffer who was ordered to undergo treatment and nearly lost
custody of the baby. The baby is one year now, she has been clean for
that time, and is in a stable relationship and expecting another baby.
The reporter was unsure of what to expect when she talked with her,
having all her preconceptions of what the young woman would be like.

The young woman sounded so clear on what she had been through and did
not want to repeat. Her love for the baby as she spoke was so strong,
even across the airwaves. The reporter asked what kept her going, and
she answered "The baby", and spoke of seeing him for the first time and
how beautiful he was. Later, when asked if she ever felt she would sniff
glue, she answered, no, the baby is more powerful than cravings. It was
amazing.
