Hi Allyson, have they tried giving the bottle when baby is only partially
awake? By this I mean getting a bottle ready and as soon as baby starts
stirring in the night or during the nap quickly give it to her before she is
fully awake to resist. This is what finally worked for a mother I worked
with, in this case it also could not be given by the mother herself but from
someone else. Also this baby was on her side, laying in bed when the bottle
was taken the first time. How about the temp of the milk? It seems that
breastfed babies really prefer their milk very warm, much like when they are
at the breast. See if heating up can help. Those are some suggestions,
sometimes it just takes trying many many things before something works and
then again some babies simply will not take a bottle. A mother I know in
our local LLL group had difficulty getting her BF babies to take a bottle
while she was at work during the day, but would breastfeed very frequently
when she was home with them and in the night. This baby actually did well
despite not taking much in during the 8-9 hours she was gone. It can be
very stressful for the family, maybe encourage them that it will take time
and experimentation. If she still won't take a bottle after some time I'd
suggest trying different feeding methods, possibly cup, spoon or syringe
feeding. My 2nd and 3rd daughters would have nothing with a bottle but did
learn to use a sippy cup with breast milk around 5-6 months. Good luck with
this family:)

Subject: How to get a baby to take a bottle

This is question that I am sure that we have all heard before. I have
permission to post. I had a om call the other day whose baby is almost 4
months old.
She had been giving her a bottle on and off since 3 weeks. She has lipase
issues with her milk so she scalds her milk before storing. Whether it be
freshly
pumped or stored milk the baby has had problems taking the bottle. She has
tried all the tried and true solutions-different bottles, different nipples,
different times of day, dad giving the bottle and using different positions.
She
was having some limited success with the nuk nipple-mom is latex senstive
and
even tried a latex nipple. Last w/e tho the baby went 1 hours with only 4 oz
in. She works Thus, Fri, Sat with Sat being a day she could have her SO
bring
the baby in to nurse. She is ready to cut back to just Sat in order to keep
BF.
I told her babies are very sensitive to stress. With this being the 1st day
back to work, the baby may have picked up on her and dad's anxiety. She has
an
abundant milk supply so I suggested a nipple shield to get the baby into the
silicone. I also suggested dunking the nipple into the milk before offering
the
bottle. I also suggested dad where something with mom's scent on it when he
feeds the baby. I suspected and mom agreed that she really doesn't want to
go
back to work and this is just the reason she needs.
Thank you for your suggestions.
