Dear Lactnet Friends:

While a baby who ingests milk from a mother using cannabis will test
positive for THC, the baby will not be high. THC needs to be heat treated
to be bioactive, which is why it is smoked or cooked. (One can't get the
effects by putting cannabis leaves in their salad.) There is no research
anywhere showing deleterious effects of infants whose mothers use marijuana.

There is this one study, where the sample used only marijuana. <
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8121737> The trouble with research on
this is that it has been nearly impossible to find a sample that is using
only cannabis. Many studies have samples who are using a variety of
recreational chemicals.

Here's some interesting studies about cannabis use and driving: <

That said, there is no research on the safety of using cannabis in the home
increasing risk of SIDS, as tobacco smoking does. There is no research on
the impact of bed-sharing (YIKES, please, no bed sharing if mom has used
conscious-altering substances: alcohol or narcotics or cannabis.).

That said, the legalization of marijuana in Washington and Colorado will
probably give us more case studies about its use. We'll have to wait and
see.

As most of us in the US have grown up with cannabis being illegal, this
massive shift in the law challenges our beliefs and values.
