Nancy asks:
"I wonder if this mother ever tried to educate herself
about breastfeeding. This is one issue that really bothers me where
I
work. So many of the women are clueless about breastfeeding and
they
think that thats normal. Would they embark on any other new project

with out finding out what it entails ahead of time? "

I think the problem is that too many moms feel they are educated.
After all, those pretty ads in the free baby magizines talk about
feeding-how breastfeeding is nice, but their product is "close".
They observe moms bottle feeding all the time in the malls and few
that are (noticeably) breastfeeding. She sees as many articles on
"why breastfeeding didn't work for me" as on "how great
breastfeeding is". Her doctor and/or baby's doctor tell her
whatever way she chooses to feed her baby is fine with him/her.
Therefore, too many moms feel they are making an educated choice
when they opt against breastfeeding. They don't even see it as
choosing not to breastfeed since, after all, as far as all the info
they have gotten, it's pretty much a toss-up! This is why a fully
honest ad campaign is so important!

Once a mom has decided to breastfeed, then I find that most will go
on to educate themselves, either through reading, attending classes,
talking with friends/family they respect and trust. Certainly some
of these sources will give helpful information, while others may not
be so good.
