I work primarily in a hospital setting that has a Level 2 nursery. Our
breastmilk collection policy simply states that a mother is to place her
expressed milk in a plastic bag. However, the nurses and clinical nurse
specialist are giving mothers bags with biohazard label on them to place
their breastmilk in (this is because breastmilk is a body fluid)....well of
course it is but I won't even get started about what else breastmilk is. What
are doing at hospitals you work at? I have the Human Milk Bank of North
America's recommendations but I still have to come up with more supporting
data.......even though our policy was approved to be with the biohazard bag.
It is a never ending battle to have to support breastfeeding. I will be
attending our clinical practice meeting in two weeks.
I would appreciate any support you may have to offer.
