Yes, I'm with Heather on this one. Our family has always used "feeding" to
mean breastfeeding. Dozens, maybe hundreds of telephone calls for me over
the years, have been answered by my partner with the phrase, "sorry,
Jessica's feeding x, y or z and can't get to the 'phone." Sometimes we even
miss out the name of the child - the word feeding seems to sum it all up
quite adequately on its own. I've also asked, and heard others ask "are you
feeding him/her yourself?" which doesn't sound at all comical here in the
UK. It's a little euphemistic, maybe, but as Heather says, it's just our way
of saying "nursing".
Wouldn't it be great to find other ways of saying bottle-feeding, as well -
the phrase "I'm bottling the baby" Lots of connotations to be going on
with, there ...
Jessica
