Last week, my pension fund made a decision to divest themselves of shares in
companies judged to engage in unethical practices. Twenty-seven companies
were affected, including Nestle. When talking to my colleagues, in all the
fields relevant to maternity care, I have consistently met surprise that
unethical marketing is still going on, despite documentation of it happening
even in Norway. 'But the Nestle representative says it isn't true!' is a
recurring comment. Duh!
My pension fund is the one covering nearly all public employees in Norway, and
our public sector is HUMONGOUS. I am happy about the divestiture, and almost
as happy about the publicity and credence to the campaign to end unethical
marketing of breastmilk substitutes. News coverage was extensive. The rep
for the pension fund said clearly and repeatedly that they require
verification by an impartial third party that bad practice has been corrected
before they will consider investing in any of the companies again.
I don't know if this information is available on the net in English; I'll look
into it and send the URL if so.
Cheers
Rachel Myr
