HI all:
I'm back after taking a long break from Lactnet. I'm an IBCLC in
Albuquerque, New Mexico and own my own business including a rental station
and I have fingers in lots of pies.
I too, frequently work with parents who have to transport their EBM in
the hot desert heat and tell parents the following personal story. It makes
it easy to understand.
One summer when I lived on a ranch, the kids and I drove from eastern
Colorado to Oklahoma City on the 4th of July in a hatch back car with no air
conditioning. (That's about a 12 hour drive in intense summer heat with the
sun beating down on the large hatch back window) I also took with me a side
of beef packed in three different kinds of coolers. One style had a button
on the side with a top that pulls down, one style was a regular cooler with
a lid, and one style was a styrofoam cooler. When we arrived, the cooler
with the button had the first two layers of meat defrosted, the cooler with
the lid has the first layer defrosted, and the meat in the styrofoam cooler
was still solidly frozen. So, I suggest getting a cheap styrofoam cooler
and a roll of duct tape, placing the milk inside, adding whatever ice
available to fill it to the top, then duct taping it shut to prevent the lid
from popping off.
Many styrofoam coolers even have a handle, but if the parents get the
smallest, it can be carried in a grocery bag (plastic or paper). In the
summer, these coolers are about $2-3 and available everywhere in the USA.
Feel free to test this yourself and to use this example.

Jacie Coryell, in the great Southwest (that incidentally looks alot like
Israel, which I visited in May)
