Dear Friends:

My secdond daughter had such soft enamel in her baby teeth that we were
going to the dentist every 3 months instead of every 6. She was exclusively
bf until about 6 months old, slept with me and nursed all night. We prepare
foods at home from scratch (aka "cooking".....a lost art in this day of
microwave, but that's another topic). No soda, no junk foods......I was
advised to stop nursing at night.

Easier said than done. Fortunately this advice came when I was nursing my
second daughter. If it had been my first, I might have been susceptible to
the "voice of authority." With my second, I combed the literature (including
LLL), and spoke with a variety of dentists.

Enamel is formed in utero. One dentist described a family of clients to me.
6 kids. All formula-fed. Fluoridated water. 5 had perfect mouths; the 6th
had a mouthful of cavities. He told me this to say that susceptibility is
individual. There was nothing I could have done.

The only thing I changed was night nursing. I learned to actively switch
sides, instead of leaning over more to get the other breast; I felt that
this would evenly distribute the milk during the night. I have no evidence
to support this beyond intuition.

The other problem was then dealing with the impact of mercury from all the
filings, a problem she is still fighting at age 20. (Other sources of
pollution came from gestating in me and from living in an environment with
polluted soil and air). Thank goodness she nursed until 5 1/2 years of age;
her gut needed all the help it could get.

warmly,
