How's this for doctor education
I recently had a mom call me over the weekend. She had
mastitis and tried calling our peds office but the nurse
answering service said "needs to go to your primary doc" Her
doc put her on antibiotics and said dont breastfeed for ten
days. This mom informed him her baby doesnt take a bottle
so advice was change to "feed on good side, pump and
dump infected side."
Mom also talked to an LC who found a way to inform mom
in proper treatment but said I can not contradict you doc. Mom
got in touch with me fortunately.
So I Emailed her primary and basically said:

< (His name)
I got a call from one of your pateints, (mom's name) who's
baby sees me. By history she sounds like she has mastitis.
She told me she had gotten differing opinions on treatment
and breastfeeding with mastitis.
Breastfeeding on the infected side is OK with me
and recommended in the literature.
If moms are in the office I usually give them a copy of the
matitis handout from Jack Newman MD a Canadian ped
and former breastfeeding consultant to UNICEF. It can
be downloaded from either of these sites:

thanks,

Sound good?
Answering service now knows who to send mastitis questions to.
