Thank you, repeat testing as you have described has already been done by Yale genetics and I have discussed the high rate of false positives with the family, but, understandably, they remain concerned.

The baby should get a fasting amino acid done by qualified metabolic genetics. NBS have a high rate of false positives. I would not recommend changing diet unless Genetics recommends this. If the baby does have GA1, this will not be taken lightly and this can only be confirmed by follow up testing, not be Newborn Screening alone. Reassure the parents and have them follow the directions of their metabolic genetics counselor and genetics nutritionist. Most will preserve breastfeeding if possible unless the baby is confirmed positive for Classic Galactosemia. For more information about GA1 see http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/glutaric-acidemia-type-i. NBS is something EVERY LC should be educated about as the results are given to parents within the first 2 weeks of life.
