In response, to the inquiry about a baby's saliva breaking down the meat of a
damaged nipple--
The enzymes in saliva (such as amylase) break down starches not proteins.
 And since breast or nipple tissue is protein this type of breakdown could
not occur.  Proteins are digested in the stomach.
