I don't think that a baby that is breastfeeding well is necessarily going to be quiet and not complain.  I breastfed three children for a long time each. The first one was fussy and had to be rocked and walked and jiggled a lot to keep her from crying.  She breastfed fine and gained fine.  I also see different temperaments in the babies I see at work as far as how easily they get frustrated, how happy they are to sit quietly in a baby seat, etc...  So I think it's fine to breastfeed to get the baby to "shut up."  It is soothing to them and a better alternative to others, IMHO.

Subject: Pacifiers

It's not just hospital practice that sometimes drives me crazy... Last month I had a mom ask me which pacifier style was best - she had received more than a dozen pacifiers at her shower, knotted into the bows. I also see a disturbing trend among mothers - breastfeeding seems to be a way to get the baby to shut up. If it was going well he wouldn't wake up and complain, would he??
Sigh.
