When a baby cannot stay on the breast, and makes popping sounds like
he's swallowing, look for a submucous cleft of the soft palate or other
soft palate dysfunction, or a swallowing problem. Loud swallowing of
saliva can be due to difficulty coordinating swallowing and breathing,
severe tongue tie with difficulty configuring the tongue to organize
fluid into a bolus, or other oral motor dysfunction.

Pre and post weights are invaluable for this situation. If you don't
have a scale manufactured specifically for determining milk intake,
watch the baby's output very, very carefully, and refer the mom to
someone who does. By 48 hours most babies take in at least a few cc's
at breast. By 4-5 days, they should be taking an ounce or more a feeding.
