Hi Ingrid,
There are so many pros and cons to test weights. Here on lactnet we have
debated this issue several times over the years. You will want to check our
archives if you want (and have time to read!) a very thorough coverage of
this important topic.
However, the article cited was in reference to "Preterm and
High-Risk Hospitalized Infants." Take for example, a very sick infant, who
is just starting to go to breast, and needs say 30 mls ebm every 3 hrs, plus
is still on IV fluids. This infant will still be in the nicu and may be for
several more days or weeks. The breastfeeding looks fair or even good, but
who knows how much baby took and how much he will need to be given of mom's
ebm via tube. The test wts show he took 10 mls, so the nurse knows to give
20 mls more. And they can do this for each feed. Or sometimes mom is not
there to breastfeed each feed, so they test weigh when mom comes to nurse,
and gavage feed the other feeds, for example.
