I've had two mothers recently who breastfed their adopted babies. Mom #1
didn't have but about 12 hours "warning" before she got her 3 week old.
Had already read about and was dedicated to breastfeeding him, though.
She had already purchased SNS and picked up a double pump on the way home
from picking up baby. She fed with SNS to retrain his suck and pumped in
between feedings to build supply. After about three weeks, she was
pumping enough to put the extra in the SNS and stop the ABM. After about
three months she had a full supply and could stop the SNS. Mom #2 had
about 3 months "warning" of adopted baby's due date. She was also
extremely committed to the concept. She got a double hospital-grade pump
and started pumping eight times/day 3 months ahead of time. By 2 weeks
before pick-up date of her 4-day-old, she had a respectable supply
(16oz/day), but was worried because OB had said baby might be "big." So I
started her on Reglan, supply increased to about 30oz/day by pick-up date.
She had purchased an SNS ahead of time, but never had to use it!
