Sharon, You are right, there are so many variables. And when one of us
helps a mom with true low milk production, we generally fix the latch,
likely have her bf more frequently, probably have her doing some
expressing, probably have change her pump and/or flanges, AND add
galactagogue. Which one of these things, or a combination of which, or
all tied together helped her production? And, ethically, could you
just use galactagogues, and no other interventions, to study the
before and after milk production? And maybe just TIME itself was the
intervention, as so often I feel if mothers would just stick with the
breastfeeding management changes  (supplementing as needed in the
meantime) the milk production might increase.
