Wow, Jennifer, this mom is sure determined. It's amazing how she could
hang in there so long with such pain!

Here is a simple thing to try that has worked on at least brand new
mothers. It might be worth a try. Especially in light of her tendency to
vasospasms. In my experience, I have found this to temporarily elevate
the pain threshhold in the moms whom I have had try it.

She might try folding a clean washcloth in 4 layers, and saturating it
with water just hot enough that she can barely tolerate in on the inner
side of her wrist, then leaving it there for 4-5 minutes till it begins
to cool. I read in a radiology textbook that radiologists sometimes use
this if a mother complains of pain when they attempt a ductography, in
the belief that it will temporarily relax the muscles in the nipple. At
the very least, it seems to me that it will relax the nerves governing
the blood vessels in the nipples.

<In other words, she was pulling the nipple up behind her top alveolar
ridge and bending it in her mouth, then using the muscles in her neck to
feed in a compensatory manner. >

Is there any possibility overactive MER that might be causing the baby to
do this in an effort to stem the "fire-hose" effect of the spray?

Has Nifedipine been tried for the vasospasms? It seems that the terrific
pain might be self-perpetuating due to the emotional stress of facing
this every time the bab nurses.

Keep us posted.

Jean
