My husband is an avid Discovery Channel watcher and picked up these tid-bits:
Baby elephant seals need to double their weight every 3 days during the
summer so they have the fat to protect them from the cold water they will need
to navigate in during the Winter.
Moms stay with babies - don't even eat - when pups are tiny - they don't
nurse each other's babies and need to protect the pups from everyone else
(especially the bull) who could roll over them without even knowing it.

Milk is the consistency of mayonnaise (I imagine there must be some
mechanism for this to be "squirted" into baby's mouth??)
