Hi All,
It was written:

>> If a baby is sensitive to dairy protein and mum has reduced her intake
for a few
days (I did mention it can take 2 weeks) at what point during the
nursing would the baby react uncomfortably with gassiness, thrashing,
discomfort, etc.

First of all, reducing the amount of dairy is not enough. It must be
completely eliminated from the diet for at least 2 weeks. SOme babies are
so sensitive that any amount of dairy will cause a reaction (personal and
professional experience here).
SOme babies will respond favorable within a few days, others it takes a few
weeks. IT depends on the baby.

>>Ped suggested soy formula (grrr) and of course baby does not seem bothered
with formula, only with breastfeeding.

Did ped tell mom about the risks of soy and phyto-estrogens? I doubt it.

Does baby react while BF or after, when the milk has had a chance to start
digesting? IF it is when the milk starts to digest, then it may very well
be a dairy allergy, and then mom must eliminate dairy completely from her
diet. Teach her how to read labels and what to look for. Living without
dairy is not as hard as one might think. I have done it for years now.

>>Oddly enough, this started when mum was hospitalized at 2 weeks for a d/c and
received antibiotics, subsequently developed thrush. Could this be a
combination of unresolved thrush and dairy sensitivity?

When mom was hospitalized, what was baby fed? Was s/he fed and ABM? Was
mom allowed to BF? Were baby and mom both treated fully for the yeast? It
could be a combination of thrush not totally cleared and dairy
allergy/sensitivity. In wchich case, they would need to be retreated for
the yeast and mom would have to get the dairy out of her diet.

>>Mum does not want to stop bf but ped suggested soy formula for a few days
and just
not bf.

If mom does not wnat to stop BF, then why should she? Ped is only
suggesting and he does not have the right to tell her she can't BF. He can
only suggest. It is her choice. It is also her choice to either give the
ABM, being fully aware of the risks of soy and it is her choice to do a
complete elimination of dairy. I sound like a broken record, here. Sorry.
I talk to too many moms who have an infant who is showing obvious signs of
dairy allergy/sensitivity and they refuse to completely eliminate the dairy
from their diet. So frustrating, especially when they quit BF and go to soy...
