I couldn't agree more!!!!! Our hospital (thankfully!) looks at security
issues as "parent education issues" so that it is our responsibility to
inform/educate moms/families re: security WHILE they room-in, including
identifying individuals that need to take their infants for tests/exams/etc.
Separating parents and newborns is not the focus!!! Security issues are
life-long, and need to start at birth. Parents are also encouraged to
accompany their infants for exams, bathing, procedures as part of helping to
inform them. Interestingly enough, Meade-Johnson has been involved (and
extremely helpful) and joined forces in a national campaign to improve infant
security, especially hospital security for newborns. You can contact your
rep for folders, videos etc. (The materials are sponsored jointly by AWHONN
(Assoc. of Women's Health, Obstetrics, and Neonatal Nurses), Assoc. for
Missing and Exploited Children, and Meade-Johnson to the best of my memory).
