Hi-this is my first time posting so forgive me if it isn't correct! Hale (in Medications and Mother's Milk, 2012) lists melatonin on pg 721 as an L3 " The effect of orally administered melatonin on newborns is unknown, but melatonin has thus far not been associated with significant untoward effects." Pg 722 lists "dysphoria in depressed patients" as an adult concern so as the 2nd poster suggested it would be appropriate to screen for depression first. "Nonprescription Drugs for the Breastfeeding Mother" by F. Nice (also published by Hale) lists basically the same info L3 and Y6 ("usually safe when breastfeeding-total dose of 1mg to 3mg per day seems to be acceptable") but also cautions "Mothers with autoimmune disorders, diabetes, and/or depression should avoid use; breastfeeding mothers should not take more than 3 mg daily." Hope this helps! Thank you to all who post here-I learn so much!
