I think if the mom is in a regular room, she is probably not too sick to
nurse. If she is keeping up supply by doing the pumping herself, why can't
she feed the baby? I think she is in hospital because she needs IV
medication, and to be monitored clinically and with blood work for a few
days.
If mom is in critical care, maybe she is too sick with overwhelming sepsis.
The other factor is the meds she is on. I don't think levaquin is absolutely
contraindicated, altho I think most doctors would be reluctant to "approve"
it for Bf. I beleive this class of drugs is associated with colitis in the
baby, there have been some cases. The baby is a bit older at 4 months, so
that is less risky than a newborn. Many hospitals do allow and even
encourage a baby to be with his hospitalized mother, although many do not. I
probably would just have my husband bring the baby in, not even asking for
permission. In fact, when I was brought to the ER and hospitalized with C.
difficile colitis and was on several antibiotics, that is just what I did
with my 14 mo.old.
Not knowing all the details of this case, and with a much younger baby, I am
not outright recommending this, but it is an option.
