How strange. I am sure I recall, about fifteen years ago, this
identical statement ran in Reader's Digest, and was attributed to the
head of the US Consumer Protection agency. At that time the big worry
was flame retardant sleepwear, and my response was that a child in bed
with his parents was a whole lot safer than a child alone in a crib, if
a fire was to break out.

What I wanted to know then, and still do, is HOW MANY CHILDREN HAVE DIED
IN CRIBS? INCLUDING THOSE CAUGHT ALONE IN FIRES OR STRANGLED BY
CLOTHING, CURTAIN PULLERS, ETC? Otherwise, the number of deaths in bed
with parents has little perspective, does it?
