Kathy, I appreciated your long and detailed email about how you manage these 
cases with premature babies. My experience is much less extensive than 
yours, but I have had some good situations with a few mothers of premature 
babies where they did kangaroo care and let the baby take those small 
feedings very frequently. Because the baby is right there, mom usually picks 
up on any feeding cues immediately. If the baby takes one ounce twelve times 
a day (for example) that's the same as 1.5 ounces eight times a day. I have 
had nurses say that it is too tiring for the baby to be fed more often than 
every 3 hours but I think because the babies are in constant contact with 
mom the rest of the time, they are very relaxed and not expending calories 
to maintain temperature or cope with the stress of being separated from 
their mothers. The babies have gained weight well this way.
