I would suggest totally involuting the affected breast (as much as possible)
prior to the surgery. I would suggest mother bf more from the unaffected
side, and If mother chooses, she can continue expressing the unaffected
breast and bf from it too, until she needs to start the chemo. In my
experience, doctors often do not know that one breast can be involuted and
the other continue producing.
I have a close family member w/ br ca who had a total mastectomy on 1/29. I
brought her to the surgery and spent the first day/nite w/ her. Just FYI it
was done as an outpatient surgery. She went into surgery about 830am and was
home by about 1230 pm. This would be compatible w/ expressing the unaffected
side immediately prior to surgery and then again immediately after pt
recovers.
