A baby I worked with recently wsa discovered to have a quite serious heart defect (at about 17 days PP). Unfortunately the stress of the ensuing travel, surgery etc proved too much for the mother's resolve to breastfeed but it was an object lesson to remind me to double check we're dealing with a healthy baby first. Incidentally we did get this baby to latch with the very soft silicone sheilds (she had been recieving EBM by bottle by this stage so we felt (the midwife and I) that getting to the baby to the breast was a step forward) Sonja LLL Lower Hutt NZ
