Yes, mothers who are nursing children beyond toddlerhood are afraid to speak
out.  I was one of them.  My children were closet nursers and were well
aware that they mustn't mention the "nursey" word around other people.  Back
then, no one had ever taken children away from mothers but it was looked on
as deviant and unhealthy for the chold.  My youngest turned 16 today, and
has been weaned about 11 1/2 years.  :)  He never had a crib or room of his
own until he was about 10.  Same with my daughter, now 19.  Not to brag, but
they are both fine examples of teenagers who have never given one minute's
problem to parents, teachers or anyone else.  Both are straight A students.
They have no "hangups" (that I know of.)  We credit attachment parenting for
the successes in our home. And I preach it whenever I can......
