Never heard of them being available here, either, Magda (thank goodness).
You are right about the ritualistic (and totally non-research-based)
weekly clinic visit, which often does undermine mothers. Yet clinics
are free, walk-in, available to all, and they can be useful as a way
of getting an on-the-spot opinion about a rash, or wheezy breathing,
or whatever. I think sometimes, the weighing can be an ice-breaker
between mother and health professional...at its best, a lot of
warm-hearted chatting and sharing can go on while this little ritual
is being observed. I think mothers, and HPs, would find it very hard
to give up.

Maybe we should think of something else - maybe we could discover
that busy mothers recover their energy quickly with a pedicure, free
to all, walk-in, feed your baby while you're being treated, choice of
nail polish, ask about baby's wheeze and cradle cap at the same time,
while the HP files and paints your toenails. Mmmmm :)))))
