dear Lactnetters - I have just had a call from a mother of an 8 month
old baby who I have spoken to in the past. Her 8 month old baby is in
hospital with 15% burns - superficial to moderate burns on chest, adomen
and arms. (pulled over electric kettle) The baby was initialy put on a
high protein supplement (Enfalac) to her breastfeeding. She then began
to have diarhea which the mother was told has a large amount of sugar in
it and therefore she must stop breastfeeding for two days while they put
the baby on a special predigested formula to enable the intestines to
rest. The mother feels that her milk is surely the best and what is
breaking her heart even more is the fact that breastfeeding is the
baby's only comfort. (hers too I imagine) Would anyone be prepared to
help me reply taking into consideration that this is a baby with burns
who apparently was losing protein. It also seems a shame to take away
the protection against infection breast milk would afford her. Thanks
so, Toby
