Hi All,
A follow up for the mom with WTC stress, taking Allegra and Sudafed and
having a 37 weeker with a poor latch. After 3 visits we finally have a more
normal latch. I used the Jacqui mouth model to show the normal palate. Since
she had been finger feeding, she quickly could tell the differnece with her
baby's shelved palate, and realized how different they were. She also cut
back on meds and is now meeting all of his supplementary needs with pumped
milk. We are finally gaining better - I hope for conitnued resolution, since
this little guy is much stronger now. A case of a gr 3, still surprised at
how much breastfeeding revolves around the baby doing his/her job correctly.
OTOH, just had a real eye-opener today and an FYI, for all of you hospital
based LC's.
I glanced at a handout today written by a family practice resident and
approved by a committee that did not include a breastfeeding committee
member. The "Care for Your Newborn" handout is distributed to our clinic and
family practice patients and has a soft professional design. It has a
wonderful (TIC) picture of a baby
being bottle fed on its back by mom standing over the baby, a section marked
"feeding" with 3 bottles on the opposite page, and no mention of our
services and only one small paragraph on breastfeeding. I suppose they felt
our separate "Practical Guide fo Breastfeeding" was enough.
On a day with 5 no latch babies, way to many outpatients, phone calls and a
letter from our department chairman wondering what it would take to emulate
services like the Boston Hosptal, so that we could become Baby-Friendly, I
simply lost it. I am ashamed that after 12 years on the job that our
hospital could even think of OK'ing this for print. I realize that it was
probably designed by someone who knows nothing about breastfeeding, or how
to promote it, but saddened by the author and or others for not realizing
the not so subtle message this was sending. I sent a a note to the chairaman
of peds explaining that this was a fine example of how not to be
"Baby-Friendly"
Please everyone, take every opportunity you have to review things that might
be sent our from your institution, especially those that you did not create
from your department an see how they measure up. Better yet, ask to sit on
committees that create this type of literature.
