brought up the tongue-tie issue, I think I should clarify some of the
confusion that has arisen regarding the severity of the procedure to release
tongue-tie:
A frenotomy is a simple release. It requires no anesthesia and no suturing.
It is a rapid outpatient procedure with little or no bleeding. From
observation, and from report from those who are old enough to be verbal, it
is virtually painless. It involves making a small slit in an almost
transparent membrane.
A frenectomy is a more serious surgical procedure, requiring both anesthesia
(local or general) and sutures. It involves slicing and perhaps removing
denser tissue, which may include muscle.
A Z-plasty is the most involved and potentially serious types of surgery for
tongue release.
