Subject: Late and early cues and swaddling

Harvey Karp wrote: "I certainly agree with you that a swaddled baby
can't
locate the breast without assistance...however, that can easily be
accomplished by a mother bringing her baby to the breast when he cries

help the baby wake fully and take a vigorous feeding)."

Crying is a *very* late cue for breastfeeding. Hand to mouth movements
are
among the early cues. Importantly, such movements are prevented by
swaddling with hands enclosed.

Dear Cynthia,

Yes, crying is a very late cue for breastfeeding, but most parents don't
want to use early cues of hunger during the night. They want to wait
until the baby is good and hungry so they eat a little more milk a
little less often.

Best wishes,

Harvey
