When I asked why stop feeding a baby after 30 min and put him back in
the isolette when he may still be rooting for more, I was been told that
babies in the Extended NICU (not yet ready for the Newborn Nursery) must
consume (25-30ml?) formula within that 30 minutes. If it takes them
longer, they are expending more calories to feed than they are cosuming
in nourishment. The baby I was asking about had spent 20 of those 30
minutes trying to learn how to latch onto mom's soft areola with flat
nipples.  He was known as a slow feeder, so the BF session was ended &
formula offered. The formula feeding extended about 10 minutes beyond
the 30 minute limit and he consumed about 23 ml.  The nurse didn't like
his pauses & firmly (roughly) mashed his chin up and down to start his
feeding again.

Can someone clarify this for me?  Thanks.
