I have 23 combined years in the NICU/SCN setting and any of us can tell you
that the premise of this research does not bear out. Term babies can be better
at handling the flow when it is faster but preterms do not handle it well at
all. I only have the abstract but I would like to know at what gestational ages
these "preterms" were fed. Our NICU is investing much time and education to
feeding these vulnerable babies as developmentally as possible. Many went to
hear Wolff and Glass speak, some of us have been trained by Marjorie Palmer on
the Neonatal Oral Motor Assessment scale. What came from that training was that
it was better to wait until 34-36 weeks to start feeding these babies but that
it is impossible due to other variables. Pacing the baby so that flow is
controlled is beneficial. We see so many preterms decompensate with bottle
feedings, apnea, brady, and possibly microaspiration. I know that there are a
great many articles that would be on the other side of the fence, some more
current. I will try to send them out once I get back to the office next week. I
would suggest looking up Wolff and Glass's book, articles by Marjorie Palmer,
Paula Meier has an artcle "Responses of Small Preterm Infants to Bottle and
Breastfeeding" in MCN, Shaker in Neonatal Network "Nipple Feeding Premature
Infants: A Different Perspective" 1990 are a few that I have at hand.
